The qualification examination of translators participating in notarial acts aims to assess the applicants' translation skills.

The examinations are organized at least once a year. The applicant is duly notified of the date, time and place of the examination at least 7 days in advance. By order of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, extraordinary examinations may be organized. Information on the conduct of the examination is published in the announcements section of the official website of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia (www.justice.am or www.moj.am).

The qualification examination is conducted by a commission established by the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

Persons with legal capacity who have higher education and a certificate confirming command of the relevant foreign language (diploma, certificate, a document confirming residence abroad, and other equivalent documents) may apply to obtain the certificates.

To obtain a certificate and take the examination, the applicant shall submit to the Ministry:
1. an application;
2. 2 colour photographs of 4 x 6 size;
3. a passport or other identity document and copies thereof (the original is returned after verification of the person's identity);
4. a copy of the higher education certificate,
5. copies of the certificates on command of the relevant language (diplomas, a certificate, a document confirming residence abroad and other equivalent documents);
6. receipts of payment of the state duty and for the expert's opinion.

For conducting the qualification examination of translators participating in notarial acts, the state duty amounts to:
- 20000 (twenty thousand) AMD, which must be paid into the following treasury account: 900005163630,
- a fee for the expert's opinion, which is transferred to the following extra-budgetary account number of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia: 900013194056, and the amount of the fee is indicated in the qualification announcement.

The qualification examination is conducted in Armenian and in open session. In order to test the applicant's knowledge, texts in Armenian and in the relevant foreign languages are given to him/her for translation. The examination is conducted in writing (by hand) on paper. When performing the translations, the applicant has the right to use dictionaries.

The accuracy of the translations is checked by experts selected by the Ministry from the list of specialists nominated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia. The results of the examination are assessed by the expert. The examination results are assessed on a 20-point scale. Scores of 17 and above are considered positive.

The applicant is duly informed of the examination results by e-mail and on the official website of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia (www.moj.am / www.justice.am), as well as on the official Internet website of public notifications of the Republic of Armenia (www.azdarar.am) no later than within 5 days following the day on which the expert opinion on the examination is received by the Ministry.

Persons who have received positive scores are issued a certificate on the fact of passing the qualification examination by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia. On the basis of the certificate, a translator is issued a translator's qualification certificate if he/she is selected as a translator by any notary.

The examination results may be appealed to the appeals commission within a period of 10 days after receiving the examination results. Moreover, the appeals commission does not have the right to lower the applicant's score.
